STERLING COFFEE

“THE FINAL FRONTIER”

FADE IN:

EXT. DEEP SPACE

A tiny spacecraft ZOOMS toward the massive USS ENTERPRISE.

INT. USS ENTERPRISE — BRIDGE

CAPTAIN KIRK sits exhausted in the captain’s chair.

MCCOY approaches with a coffee decanter and pours Kirk a cup.

Kirk takes it, unenthused.

MCCOY: Just another three months of this sludge until shore leave.

KIRK: I can’t wait that long, Bones. There has to be an outpost that has comparable coffee—with flavor, boldness, and excitement.

SPOCK: It is unlikely a roaster of that caliber operates this far from any Starfleet post.

McCoy raises his cup.

MCCOY: Bottoms up.

Suddenly—

UHURA: Captain! An unidentified craft is fast approaching us!

Kirk sits up.

KIRK: Shields up. Prepare to make contact.

The viewscreen FLICKERS ON.

A team of COFFEE ROASTERS AND BARISTAS, all sporting Sterling Coffee Roasters attire, appears on the viewscreen.

One ROASTER steps forward.

ROASTER: Greetings, USS Enterprise. We are a roasting vessel—the USRS Sterling. We hear you’re in need of one-hundred-percent roasted coffee beans for your crew.

KIRK: What do you have?

The Roaster holds up a bag.

ROASTER: The CERRO BLANCO. A new offering produced aboard our modest roastership, hailing from the region of San Martín in northern Peru.

KIRK: Commander Spock. Can you verify this data?

Spock scans the bag.

SPOCK: My sensors indicate a naturally processed coffee with highlighted notes of pineapple, complementary sweetness, and a rich, creamy body.

A beat.

SPOCK (CONT'D): The roaster’s offering is sound.

ROASTER: Captain, we only want to provide you and your crew with an exciting new roast, bursting with bold flavors.

Kirk eyes the Roaster suspiciously.

KIRK: How can I be sure you’re not part of a coffee conglomerate posing as an independent coffee purveyor?

The Roaster smirks.

ROASTER: Say less, Captain.

CUT TO:

Bags of STERLING COFFEE — PERU CERRO BLANCO NATURAL suddenly MATERIALIZE aboard the ship.

Cups of Sterling drip coffee materialize in the hands of the crew.

Spock looks down at the cup that has appeared in his hand.

Kirk takes a sip. His eyes widen.

KIRK: Rich. Vibrant. Tropical.

Spock takes a sip.

SPOCK: The roaster’s description appears accurate.

Kirk turns to McCoy.

KIRK: Bones?

McCoy takes a sip.

MCCOY: It’s a damn fine cup, Jimmy.

Kirk smiles, pleased. He turns toward the viewscreen.

KIRK: Thank you for your coffee—

The viewscreen is dark. The roasters have vanished.

UHURA: Sir, the USRS Sterling has broken connection and is departing.

Spock takes another sip from his mug. A beat.

SPOCK:Fascinating.

EXT. DEEP SPACE

The USRS STERLING'S massive engines ignite.

ROASTER (V.O.): Coffee. The final frontier.

The engines ROAR.

ROASTER (V.O.) (CONT'D): This is the voyage of Sterling Coffee.

The ship accelerates.

ROASTER (V.O.) (CONT'D): To seek out new and refreshing origins...

The ship WARPS OUT OF FRAME.

ROASTER (V.O.) (CONT'D): ...and boldly go where no cup has reached before.

CUT TO BLACK.

BREWING RECOMMENDATIONS

Brewing coffee shouldn't be difficult, so let's keep it simple.

On an auto drip or pour over, a good brewing ratio to start with is 1:16 (aka, the golden ratio) of coffee to water. For example, when making one 9-10oz mug of brew, 20 grams of coffee with 320 grams of water should do the trick. Fine tune the brew to your desired taste by incrementally adjusting the measurements.

Have a home espresso bar setup? At our cafe we typically aim for a 30g double shot (or up to 35g with light roasts) using 20g of ground coffee and extract between 28-32 seconds. Voilà!

Whether you want to extract espresso, polish your brew on a chemex, enjoy the richness through a French press, or simply brew on drip -- Make it yours!
